About This Project

The Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre

Here a glass box with an articulated timber structure forms a transparent pool enclosure, in contrast to the heavier concrete block and off form concrete dressing-room facilities adjoining the pool. The upper level entrance is an extension of the pedestrian path along the edge of the site, formed by a curving ramp and staircase.

An expressed system of movement is central to the exposition of the architecture. Designed in association with Kevin Borland.

The building reflects the aesthetic of its time – modern and brutal or honest in its expression of materials. Highly awarded immediately following its completion, the experience of using the facility continues to be applauded by both its old and new patrons.

Its indoor/outdoor connections revolutionary at the time of construction have set examples for many facilities to follow.
