Springvale Transit Interchange, Melbourne, VIC
$120M
Springvale Transit Interchange project involved grade separating Springvale Road and the rail line. The project included master planning, station design and precinct urban design.
The sweeping umbrella roof form, with a large skylight providing natural light throughout the concourse, creates a new focal point for the community – easily identifiable as the station.
The architecture and structure are deliberately integrated for ease of construction, aesthetic outcome and cost efficiency. The roof was designed as four sections that were assembled at ground level before being craned into place.
Consideration was given to place making and urban design, with the station forecourt envisaged as a new urban plaza for community interaction and use. The vibrant forecourt and free-flowing public space activate the site, with its coloured concrete surface connecting to the footpath and station building.
Lowering the rail track and station platforms below street level, the new station design significantly improves:
Other facilities include an air-conditioned waiting room, public unisex toilets, separate offices and facilities for station staff and the Protective Services Officers (PSOs).
The result has provided the diverse community of Springvale with a station precinct which considers both the cultural diversity of the community as well as the cities future urban growth.
