Victoria University Academic Tower
The development of the Victoria University (VU) Academic Tower will complete the current vision for the Queen Street campus. VU Tower will comprise of around 35,300sqm gross floor area over 30 levels and allow the university to consolidate a number of existing CBD facilities into an unified, contemporary building.
The building design represents the forward thinking aspirations and vision of the University. The Tower format is a modern and evolutionary way of delivering a high density campus on a tight inner city footprint. Its sculpted shape will add a new dimension to the precinct, as well as responding and integrating with the immediate surrounding urban massing.
To ensure mass of the tower is not over bearing as a three dimensional object building, the slim vertical proportions of the front are repeated on the rear (north) elevation whilst the east elevation is recessed at a mid point where the podium steps back from the street.
The facade is articulated and folded to create a distinctive form, whereby mass and shape is ‘broken’ to distinguish upper and lower elements which in turn fragment to create an ‘off set’ layering expression to the east side facade. The tower symbolises a unified integration of existing heritage buildings and modern architecture.
It is double glazed and includes thermal properties to minimise heat loss and heat gain through the facade.
