The Kai Tak Sports Park will provide a magnificent addition to sporting infrastructure in Hong Kong, with the addition of three venues capable of holding international sporting events and catering for a wide range of recreation, entertainment and sports functions.
Located on the edge of Victoria Harbour, the reference design created an elevated pedestrian plaza, to connect all venues and two adjacent railway stations, bus and harbour ferry services. Extensive retail and hotel facilities are also included that will activate the area.
The key objective was to create an iconic form that will create a strong, memorable building, signifying and creating an identity for the new sporting precinct.
The multi-purpose main stadium seats over 50,000 spectators and features a retractable roof. Primarily, it will host rugby and football but it will also accommodate large-scale entertainment events such as concerts, conventions, exhibitions and corporate functions.
The moving roof panels are designed to slide sideways into pockets set down within the overall depth of the roof. This unique design allows the organic, ‘shell-like’ shape to appear constant in profile, whether the roof is open or closed.
The multi-purpose indoor sports centre seats 10,000 spectators, with 80% of seats retractable or removable, making it a highly flexible venue. It can accommodate up to 40 badminton courts and will provide a variety of sports facilities for the community, to use for training and competition at regional or international levels.
The public sports ground includes a 400m running track, a grass rugby / football pitch size in-field and seating for 5,000 spectators. The venue is primarily for the community to use but will also serve as a warm-up venue for major events held in the main stadium.
