Jackson Architecture responded to a challenging brief for the new premises of the Australian the Fair Work Commission in Melbourne.
This brief mandate was to provide an innovative and progressive design that delivered improved amenity and facilitated collaboration for the Public, Registry staff and Commission Members.
The project comprises three distinct functional zones; Courtrooms, Conciliation Suites, Judicial Chambers, Registry and Administrative facilities.
Extensive and thorough stakeholder and user group consultation was employed throughout the briefing, schematic and design development phases of the project, ensuring that the challenging and dynamic design meets all necessary functional criteria.
The building was not designed to accommodate Hearing Rooms or Courtrooms.
Through creative and intelligent design, Jackson Architecture overcame the restrictive parameters of standard 3.7 metre floor to floor heights, a central lift core and lobby with a single circulation and generic office building services.
The result is a modern yet dignified premises that is connected to its urban surrounding, physically and psychologically comfortable, and conducive to the functions of mediation and dispute resolution.
The design outcome acknowledges the Commission’s history and traditions by the integration of artworks into built design elements.
